2011 Scholarship Committee Report - Some Good Work Underway

— By George Gordon, EANT Member, Scholarship Committee Co-chair Person

NOBANTUWe members of the Scholarship Committee wish to thank all of the members and friends of EANT who have made contributions to "The Friends of the Enneagram Fund" since the scholarship program began in 2002. It has been a time-consuming and yet very fulfilling experience, for us to work with these candidates, to guide and encourage them along the certification process, and to receive their glowing reports of the impact of their experience with the program.

SHARING IN ETHIOPIA

Most of them register and apply the first time with the understanding that they will primarily be adding a new tool to their repertoire of life and/or professional skills. They frequently report with an attitude of glorious surprise that far more important than the acquisition of new skills was the positive, life-transforming experience that they received. They are always effusive in their praise to the leadership of Peter, Terry, David, and Helen.

GROUPSeveral months ago, I received a call from a member of the Washington Enneagram Group. She said, "We often read and hear your appeals for contributions to the scholarship fund, but where does this money go?" I responded that I thought that her question was very legitimate, and I gave her a brief review of our activity and grants.

At our recent 2011 EANT Conference at Asilomar, I gave the report that you will find below so that many others may also have an answer to this question.

MahaliaOver the years, we have rarely granted a full scholarship to a resident of the continental US. It has been our custom to expect US residents to pay at least a small portion of their registration fee. Occasionally, we will decline an application. This year we have believed it necessary to decline offers to 6 applicants. The primary reasons for the declines have been failure to demonstrate economic need and failure to offer any clear plans regarding how one plans to teach the Enneagram.

We have noticed several trends among our candidates. In the last two years especially, there has been a dramatic upswing in the number of applicants. In many years past, we might not have more than 6 applicants total. The world economy has certainly had its impact. Those candidates who come the farthest seem to have the best certification completion rate. Some of our US candidates find that their circumstances improve and complete the process using their own financial resources. Younger candidates in the midst of many life transitions seem to need to extend the process over longer periods of time.

Type 9s

As we gain experience with these changing circumstances, our committee members hope to follow up with candidates from previous years to learn of their experience with the process and hopefully to discern what impediments might be the primary causes for candidates not completing the certification process. We also want to alter our information materials to specify that the category "Intention to Teach" actually means intention to certify. We have also begun to appoint voluntary mentors to our applicants to support them until they reach the typing internship when they will receive a supervisor appointed by Peter as director of the typing internship program.

We are always happy to answer questions about the scholarship program. Please contact us with such questions or recommendations. If you wish to consider joining the work of our committee, please contact us. As the number of applicants grows, we certainly feel the need of sharing this rewarding work with a wider committee staff.

And again, we thank you on behalf of all of the recipients for your generous support of this program. We wish that each of you could read their sincere letters of gratitude.

Warm wishes,
The EANT Scholarship Committee
